Nixon releases the “Smoking Gun” tape under Supreme Court order.
A recorded conversation from June 1972 made the Watergate cover-up audible and changed the political count in Washington.
Under orders from the United States Supreme Court, President Richard Nixon released the recording known as the “Smoking Gun” tape. It captured a June 23, 1972 conversation about interfering with the investigation of the Watergate break-in.
The tape mattered because it replaced inference with a president’s recorded words. Political allies who had defended Nixon could hear the evidence for themselves.
August 5 marks the moment support collapsed. Three days later Nixon announced his resignation, making the tape a hinge between investigation and departure.
