1956
TAT-1 inaugurates a new line of conversation across the Atlantic.
The first submarine transatlantic telephone cable system turned an ocean crossing into communications infrastructure — a feat of engineering measured in voices brought nearer.
On September 25, 1956, TAT-1 was inaugurated as the first submarine transatlantic telephone cable system. The milestone joined two familiar human acts — laying a line and making a call — at the scale of an ocean.
At first, the cable carried 36 voice-band channels on the New York-to-London route, giving transatlantic callers a dedicated path beneath the sea.
Its inauguration was a three-nation affair involving the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. TAT-1 did not make the ocean smaller, but it gave voices a direct way across it.
