A remembrance of Lithuanian Jews

Lithuania observes September 23 as the national day of remembrance for the genocide of Lithuanian Jews. It honors the Jewish people murdered during the Holocaust and the communities whose members were confined, deported, and killed under Nazi German occupation.

Jewish life had been part of Lithuania for centuries. The Holocaust destroyed most of that population, leaving losses that remain present in family histories, former synagogues and schools, mass killing sites, and towns where Jewish communities no longer exist.

Why the date is September 23

September 23 is tied to the liquidation of the Vilna Ghetto in 1943. German occupation authorities had forced the city's Jews into the ghetto in 1941, after mass shootings had already begun at Ponary, now Paneriai, outside Vilnius.

During the final liquidation, the ghetto's remaining prisoners were killed or deported to concentration camps, forced-labor camps, and killing centers. The date therefore joins Lithuania's national memorial observance to a specific chapter in the destruction of Vilnius's Jewish community.

Memory in Lithuanian history

The genocide took place under Nazi German occupation and involved persecution, confinement, forced labor, deportation, and mass murder. Lithuanian collaborators also participated in the persecution and killing of Jews, a part of the country's history that remembrance must address directly.

Commemoration centers the victims by preserving their names, testimony, families, and communities. Teaching what happened in Vilnius and across Lithuania keeps the observance rooted in documented history rather than in general statements about loss.
