Karl Benz unveils the Benz Patent-Motorwagen, the first purpose-built automobile.
Before traffic, suburbs, road trips, and exhaust, there was an object built to move differently.
The first purpose-built automobile is easy to shrink into a museum object: wheels, frame, engine, inventor. But the Motorwagen is better understood as a hinge. After it, distance would begin to negotiate with machinery in a new way.
The road did not change all at once. Cities, laws, fuel, danger, labor, leisure, and landscape all had to catch up. The unveiling is the first public sentence in a much longer argument.
