H. L. Hunley is raised after 136 years on the ocean floor.

A carefully engineered lift returned the Civil War submarine to the surface without turning recovery into spectacle.

The Confederate submarine H. L. Hunley was raised to the surface after 136 years on the ocean floor. Its recovery was an archaeological operation built around patience, structural support, and the risk of losing material at the moment of rescue.

The vessel carried the remains of its crew and the history of a war fought to preserve slavery. Conservation therefore had to hold engineering interest beside an honest account of the cause the submarine served.

August 8 records the lift, not the end of the inquiry. Once the Hunley left the water, years of preservation and study began.

Restrained maritime archaeology illustration of a corroded nineteenth-century submarine being lifted in a support cradle from calm water, with workers distant and no flags, bodies, logos, or text.
The lift ended 136 years underwater and began the slower work of conservation, identification, and interpretation.
