1895
Ferdinand von Zeppelin patents his navigable balloon.
The patent translated an ambition for controlled lighter-than-air flight into drawings, structure, and a claim that could be built.
On August 31, 1895, German Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin patented his navigable balloon. The proposal concerned a rigid, steerable airship whose form would be held by an internal framework rather than the pressure of a single soft envelope.
A patent is not a flight. It is a technical argument made in drawings and claims: how lift, structure, propulsion, and control might be joined into a machine that can be reproduced.
Zeppelin’s name later became shorthand for the rigid airship itself. The patent marks an earlier threshold, when an imposing silhouette of the twentieth-century sky still existed as an engineered possibility on paper.
